ExHIBition “Matisse in Vence. The Stations of the Cross”

From 29 March to 28 June 2026

Following its first stop in Nice, the exhibition “Henri Matisse. The Stations of the Cross – Drawing the Passion”, co-produced by the Musée Matisse Nice and the Baltimore Museum of Art, continues its tour in the United States. The exhibition explores the genesis of the Chemin de Croix [Stations of the Cross] designed for the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence – a monumental work that remains relatively unknown to the public.

The project was instigated by the Musée Matisse Nice, which has made a decisive contribution through the loan of an exceptional set of 20 some preparatory drawings, combined with a mock-up, archives and documents that testify to the artist’s painstaking design work before formally completing the final ceramic piece. This scientific and cultural collaboration deepens the understanding of a project that Matisse regarded as the culmination of his entire career.
