Study Centre Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse

HENRI MATISSE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH GRANT

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS IS CLOSED

The Musée Matisse Nice and the Musée départemental Henri Matisse, Le Cateau-Cambrésis have joined forces to award the “Henri Matisse International Research Grant” to a doctoral student, post-doctoral researcher or research professor in history, art history or museum studies, to encourage and support research into the life and work of Henri Matisse (1869-1954).

The aim of the grant is to support independent research, conducted in regular dialogue with the academic teams at the Musée Matisse Nice and the Musée départemental Henri Matisse, Le Cateau-Cambrésis, to contribute to new discoveries and shed light on aspects of Henri Matisse’s life and work that are still poorly understood.

The Study Centre Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse includes both a library, a documentary space and a photo library. It’s located on the top floor of the museum (level 2 of the Villa des Arènes – Administration) and is intended for researchers, teachers, students and amateurs, by appointment (musee.matisse@ville-nice.fr).

The Library

It is made up of more than eight thousand works (monographs on contemporaries of Matisse, works on the history of art and human sciences). A space is specifically dedicated to the artist (monographs, testimonials, exhibition catalogues and sales catalogues).

It also houses part of Henri Matisse’s personal library (not accessible).

Collections of old magazines complete this set.

You can access and research the library’s holdings on the online catalogue of the regional municipal library (BMVR) of Nice.

Publications available for exchange
To further enrich the collection of its library, the musée Matisse pursues a policy of book exchanges with institutions around the world. The museum’s publications (notably its exhibition catalogues) are available for exchange, as well as those indicated on this list.

The Documentation Centre

It brings together various scientific documents (work files, iconographic documents, thematic files) and historical documents (articles on Matisse in period newspapers and magazines), making the museum a research centre for Matisse studies. A consultation space is available to researchers, professors, historians and thesis students, by appointment.

Photo Library

It is made up of a collection of more than three hundred and fifty prints – made by renowned photographers such as Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Hélène Adant, who was a regular visitor to Matisse’s home. Regularly enriched with new acquisitions, the photographic collection is further enhanced by exhibitions and loans.
