Installing Matisse’s large cut-out “Fleurs et fruits”
After embarking on a major research and restoration program in 2021, the musée Matisse re-installed its large cut-out Fleurs et fruits in a specifically designed display case. This huge showcase, designed and manufactured by the Belgian company Meyvaert, is a gem of museographic engineering. Thanks to Meyvaert’s expertise and high-quality design, the Musée Matisse has risen to the challenge of protecting this masterpiece for future generations. The German company Erco designed a state of the art lighting system to bring it to life, showing that colour is first and foremost a mode of vibration of light.
This new display brings Fleurs et fruits – one of the major works of Matisse’s last period – back to its full glory and will highlight its monumental size.
Our new installation provides the perfect occasion to explore the cut-out technique, its sources of inspiration and its translations into other mediums – stained glass, tapestry, silkscreen or graphic art (posters) – all of which are well represented in the museum’s collection. An ensemble of cut-out shapes which Matisse never used in his work and which were given in 2012 to the City of Nice are also presented.
