“IL MONDO IN UNA STANZA”, Mudec – Museo delle Culture di Milano (ITALy)
From 8 October 2026 to 27 February 2027
Exhibition curators: Ellen McBreen and Chiara Gatti

The MUDEC – Museo delle Culture of Milan presents an ambitious exhibition project on the relationship between Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, 1869 – Nice, 1954) and the cultures the artist encountered during his studies and expeditions beyond the borders of Europe.
« Matisse. Il mondo in una stanza » (The World in a Room) addresses a central and long-underappreciated question: how African, Islamic, Russian, Pacific, or Chinese art shaped Matisse’s language from within, redefining the very boundaries of Western modernism.
Edited by Ellen McBreen and Chiara Gatti, the journey spans the entire arc of the artist’s work in 8 sections – each of which analyses a key theme in the evolution of his research.
The exhibition brings together around 100 works – paintings, works on paper, sculptures and photographs – from prestigious international institutes, including an exceptional collection of 30 works from the collections of the Musée Matisse Nice. The City of Nice has in particular loaned drawings such as Portrait de Madame Henri Matisse (1915) andTête de Haïtienne (1943), African clothing and fabrics, a “Bombo” mask and sculptures (Jeannette I to 5), Le Tiaré.
The exhibition catalog is on sale here.
