An air conditioning project is almost complete.
Committed to improving the conservation of its collections and reducing the impact its activities have on the environment, the Matisse Museum continues to modernise its heating, ventilation and air conditioning facilities as part of its overall policy of better energy management.
From 8 January to 15 March 2024, the Matisse Museum is closing its doors for a third phase of climate engineering regulation work. The old equipment on the entire ground floor of the “Villa des Arènes” will be replaced to improve conditions to conserve and present the works (temperature and humidity control).
The new installation will provide heating, air conditioning, along with dehumidifying and humidifying the air in the premises, whatever the conditions outside. Obsolete appliances will be replaced by high-performance equipment providing, on the one hand, better conditions for presenting the works and, on the other, better control of the museum’s energy use. I understand how fragile the collections we keep can be, and this project will help us better control and stabilise the climate throughout the building where major work has been taking place in recent years.

The City of Nice has taken care of the Matisse Museum and the important collection it houses with particular attention in recent years. Two phases of work have marked the history of the museum recently:
- In 2017, major work on climate regulation systems was carried out on the 1st floor of the “Villa des Arènes”. The work in early 2024 complements and completes this project;
- In 2021, a major project to renovate the waterproofing of the modern wing of the museum was carried out, and now helps better regulate the temperature of this part of the museum. The ageing roof portholes (smoke extraction hatches) have also been replaced, significantly improving the energy management of these spaces.
