It includes a library, a documentation centre and a photo library. It is located on the top floor of the conservation department (second level of the villa des Arènes) and is intended for researchers, teachers, students and non-experts alike. Consisting of more than eight thousand works (monographs of Matisse’s contemporaries, works of art history and humanities). A space is specifically dedicated to the artist (monographs, testimonials, exhibition catalogues and sales catalogues).
It also houses part of Henri Matisse’s personal library (non-communicable).
It brings together various scientific documents (works files, iconographic documents, thematic files) and historical documents (articles on Matisse in newspapers and magazines of the time) and thus gives the museum its character as a research and reference centre to find out about the master’s work. A consultation space is available to researchers, professors, historians, PHD students. (by appointment).
It consists of a collection of more than three hundred and fifty prints – taken by renowned photographers such as Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Hélène Adant, who was often seen with Matisse. Regularly enriched by new acquisitions, the photographic collection is enhanced by exhibitions and loans.
