In connection with the exhibition “Matisse in the 1930’s” on view through January 29, 2023 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the museum (The Irma and Herbert Barness Endowed Lecture) hosted an online lecture on the theme of the model and the studio on Thursday, November 27, 2022.

A panel of scholars and curators, including Claudine Grammont (director, Musée Matisse Nice) and Ellen McBreen (Professor and Chair of the History of Art at Wheaton College, Massachusetts), discuss the life and work of Lydia Delectorskaya, Matisse’s studio assistant, manager, and model. This talk shines light on the importance of this often overlooked figure, providing a deeper understanding of her role in Matisse’s studio practice.
Moderated by Matthew Affron, the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The exhibition “Matisse in the 1930’s” is co-produced with the musée Matisse in Nice and the Orangerie and Orsay museums in Paris. It will be on view at the musée Matisse from 23 June to 24 September 2023.
